Breaking the Rules Blog Stop, Review and Giveaway

Breaking the Rules

By HB Heinzer

Synopsis:
Growing up in small town Wisconsin, Carly Turner couldn't wait to escape when she graduated high school. Now, she's living the life in New York City, even if she isn't seeing her name in lights like she used to dream about at night. She's living paycheck-to-paycheck, working behind the scenes in small theaters off Broadway. When there's an equipment malfunction the week before opening night, Carly makes a call that winds up changing everything.
Life in the city isn't all it's cracked up to be. While she feels like she's getting closer to making the move from behind the scenes to center stage, she misses being surrounded by people who understand the quirks that come from living in a town of five thousand people. That, and the fact that he's sexy as sin, make Adam everything she feels like she's missing.
The only problem? He's her best friend's kid brother...
Adam Sanders wants to settle down, find a good woman and start a family like he sees so many of his friends doing. But how is he supposed to meet Ms. Right when he's constantly on the road for work? When he's sent to New York to handle a repair that would typically be contracted out as a favor to his boss, he's just about to his breaking point.
Everything changes when the stagehand sent to open the theater for him is none other than his big sister's childhood friend. The same girl he lusted after as a teenager. Could this be fate's way of showing him that he was looking in the wrong place for love?
As Adam and Carly's friendship develops, lines will be crossed and rules will be broken. Will they be able to come out the other side without destroying everything they had back in Brooklyn?

Meet the Author:

With the exception of three years spent in the middle of Nebraska, H.B. Heinzer has called southern Wisconsin home. During that time in Nebraska, she imagined one of her favorite authors living on the far western edge of the county, just south of the highway. At the time, becoming a novelist was a distant dream for her. Now, she is the author living in that location. Ironically, she later found out that same favorite author lives just outside the town HB lived in for the first eighteen years of her life.
Now, HB lives in the middle of nowhere but still close enough to the city to not feel isolated. It's the perfect place to let her two kids run and explore their huge yard, teach them about the food chain as they prepare their first-ever garden and debate building a chicken coop. It's one of those dreams that is only possible thanks to the amazing opportunities that have come through writing.

Dee’s Review

I read this book right after reading Bent. I strongly suggest if you have read Bent, you read it again before reading this. It makes much more sense ;0) . I really liked this book. I liked that we got to see the story of Micah and Jules, but from a different point of view. We saw how Adam responds and reacts to everything that happens to his sister. We also get to see him in the big brother role.  But then we also had the story of Carly and Adam. That's truly the main focus. I did realize when reading this that I had the same type of reaction to Carly that I had to Jules. I wanted to slap them both. Or shake some sense in to them.
Okay that is a little extreme..maybe a little more like this...

No joke.. I just wanted to scream at them to get their crap together. I didn't want Carly to lose Adam, but I almost sure that was what was going to happen. He was trying so hard, and he was so perfect- THEY were so perfect. I get it, people have problems. Most people do, but come on chick- get your crap together!! GAH!

Anyway. I love HB’s style, the way she sucks you into the story and you don’t want out until you know how it’s gonna end. OOOH yeah!!! I really did like the epilogue too, the tease she gives us. Nicely DONE!! I also really like that it was like Carly grew up in a way through the story. Adam was always so resolute in what he needed and wanted, and we just had to wait for Carly to get there. It’s worth the wait. I give this book 3.5 hearts!

Excerpt
“I accepted long ago that I’m never getting married. Why would I? My parents fought all the time, every boyfriend I’ve ever had cheated on me at least once, and most of our couples end up divorced before the ink is dry on the wedding license. I’ve seen what happened tonight probably a dozen times, but that doesn’t make it any easier to watch, and I certainly don’t make jokes about it. Not to mention, I really needed this event to lead to other events, and while tonight’s epic failure wasn’t my company’s fault, having our name attached won’t be good for business. I have no idea what we’re going to do.”

I’m rambling now, but his body is suddenly brushing against mine, and the heat of his skin is driving me insane.

“Your business is in trouble?”

His voice is close, too close, and I feel his warm breath against my ear. For some inexplicable reason, I tilt my head, and I shudder when I feel his nose glide across my neck. His hand finds my knee before sliding beneath the fabric of my pencil skirt.

“We may have to close,” I whisper, trying not squirm as he lifts my skirt a little higher. “Nobody wants a wedding planner.”

“I want a wedding planner.”

Unbeautifully Review by Dee

Unbeautifully
by Madeline Sheehan

Blurb:

Warning: This is not a story about fate or destiny. This is a story about pain, sorrow, and suffering. This is an impulsive whirlwind romance between two lovers that are not meant to be together. Theirs is not a world with sunshine and roses. Instead, their love blossoms in a secret world full of crime, violence, and death. Their story is about what can be born from nightmares.

Danielle “Danny” West is the daughter of Deuce West, President of the Hell’s Horsemen Motorcycle Club. A sweet and beautiful girl, she loses her way, searching for things that are always out of her reach. Erik “Ripper” Jacobs is the Sergeant of Arms in the Hell’s Horsemen. Once a man who always had a smile on his face, his life takes a turn for the worst when a tragedy befalls him, leaving him scarred and broken. During a midsummer night, Danny and Ripper’s paths cross, forever changing their lives. Hastily, their lust turns to love until another tragedy forces them apart. On a journey that is marred with ugliness and chaos, Danny and Ripper must discover if their unforeseen connection can find the beauty in their world.

This is Danny and Ripper’s story.

Everything has beauty. Even the ugly. Especially the ugly.
Because without ugly, there would be no beauty.

Dee’s Review

Ever read a book that sticks with you weeks, hell months after you read it? That’s what Unbeautifully is to me. I mean, holy shit, I can’t believe half the stuff I read. Literally I think I went from turned on, to pissed, to crying, back to pissed and depressed within a few chapters. I mean Madeline, way to wrip a chicks heart out and then give it back to her. But that’s what she Madeline does, right? Finds the rawest, dirtiest, gonna wrip your heart out and break it, and give it back to you duct taped back together, with a tattoo on it and you’ll have  a smile on your face, cheesin like a third grader. But I still sit asking WHY.. WHY?!!?! then you move to What just happened?

I know it sounds fucked up, but damn if the ride ain’t worth every freaking page. EVERY PAGE! Danny and Ripper. Talk about a fucked up love tale. But I’ll be honest I … read it twice. And damn if I won’t do it again.  Madeline writes these love stories that take you on some pretty turbulent rides, but I promise you friends- they’re the fucking best rides of your life. I was honestly afraid where this one was going to go after Undeniable. But I will tell you what I loved. I loved that we got to see more of the aftermath of Frankie. How it affected all of them, and how they all fought to overcome that demon. And out of those fights, come some of the most beautiful loves that I have ever read on paper. We get to see Eva and Deuce fighting to overcome that battle of what he did to them, and how he still haunts them both. We see how Ripper fights with what Frankie did to him, and the blame he places on those involved. We get to see a little more of Crazy Kami. And of course, the shot hear round the MC world. That was some crazy crap right there! But I ate up every word. I never saw that coming though, never even thought it would happen. I guess that's why  Mads is the mastermind behind this series. She thinks of all this messed up, raw, gonna eat you up and spit you up drama. Where at the end you can't believe you made it there and that everything made sense and you loved every minute.

But most of all we have Danny and Ripper together, and some apart. But lets be honest, even apart they were together. I mean when you belong to someone, you belong to them.  The drama is to the max, there is so much shit going on. Danny is so complicated but simple at the same time. And when I say simple, I mean simple with what she wants, who she wants. But that is never easy with Madeline, is it.. and that is why we love her. Then one night changes it all, one night. Ripper changes it all. And I was so stoked, just when I thought things were going to go down and be all hunky dorey and happy unicorns and rainbows.. the damn rug is pulled out from other me and shit hits the fan all over again. And it doesn’t just hit the fan, she throws us down into a pit and we have to crawl out. Without a ladder.. when its raining. And you come out dirty as shit with a smile on your face, then you dive back in for more. Feel me?

Poor Danny. She struggles with this fight, and damn if I wasn’t there with her. Screaming at Ripper to stay, then to pick up the damn phone. And just when you think she will have her happy ever after, she might get her forever after all. HOLY CRAP!!! Not just yet. But she’s not the only one who’s happy ending gets a wrench thrown at it. Nope.. a little bit of everyone has something going on. And you will want to pay attention to every detail. Never saw some of this stuff coming, and obviously neither did Deuce. And let's not forget about that toe curling, jaw dropping, bent over a motorcycle, slide down the wall sex.

Me too, my friend, me too. Jesus Madeline. I don’t know if this review makes any sense because my head IS STILL REELING! I freaking love your ass. This is for you.. this gif right here. This is what you need to tell people, because...it applies. If I were you, I'd have this made into a shirt and wear it.. daily.

I give this book 5 hearts. I don’t think this book could’ve been any better.  If you haven’t read this yet, you are seriously missing out. You need to pick this up and read it.. like yesterday.

About the Author Sharon Buchbinder

I’ve been writing fiction since I was in high school and have the rejection slips to prove it.

After I graduated with a BA in Psychology and no job, I realized my dreams of working in the attic writing great prose would have to take a back seat to the simple pleasures of eating, drinking, and having a roof over my head.

Fast forward a few decades, and I had a career path that would make all but the kindest say, “What were you thinking?” After working in health care delivery for years, I became a researcher, then an academic. I had it all– a terrific, supportive husband, an amazing son, and a wonderful job. But that itch to write (some call it obsession), kept beckoning me to “come on back” to writing fiction. I spent one whole month away doing nothing but writing fiction, the first of many drafts of my first novel.

My genres include horror, mystery, romance and weird blends of the three. For a sampling of my work (fiction and nonfiction), click on “Stories and Links“.

When not attempting to make students and colleagues laugh, I can be found herding cats and dogs, golfing, deep sea fishing, or writing.

****Sandie's Review:****

This book was not at all what I had expected. I was like OH MY, HELL NO! I think my emotions and anxiety is being tested by these authors. I enjoyed this book because it wasn't all butterflies and roses. The main character Angie Edmonds has had a hell of a childhood, turning to drugs as a way to numb things. When she finds out she is preggers she gives up all of that for her child. I love this. I know its a hard thing to do, so I was happy reading that.

Her parents are crazy! No seriously they are. I know family is supposed to be all about supporting each other and being there for one another. Well her parents kidnap her kid! WTF!!!

Of course you know the US can't really help you in this matter. Isabella a drug lord in Mexico helps Angie. Ok so I get your all probs like huh? I know but trust me it was a really good thing as Isabella has certain connections that will be needed. She assigns Alejandro to help Angie. When he was introduced I was like "oh yeah, here we go."

Alejandro has a secret that he is holding back and I totes get it. Its all crazy and complex. This is a paranormal book but the way it is written I kind of forgot that. I loved that I was swept into this crazy world of cults, drug lords, human trafficking, good vs evil.

The book was well written and it flowed so I never felt as though I was missing anything. I enjoyed this book and at times was yelling at my computer. I know some of the subject matters are hard to stomach, but I felt this added more to the story. I was enthralled and captivated.

I gave this book:

“Okay, little girl,” Sophia clapped her hands at Gabriela who was comfortably seated
on Alistair’s lap. “Time for bed. Now.”
“But, Mama-”
“Don’t you but me. It’s seven o’clock. Time for you to go to bed.”
Gabriela pouted at her mother and then turned her head, looking at Alistair for help.
He just smiled at her and motioned his head to Sophia.
“Five minutes more, Mama, pleeeease.”
Sophia looked at her watch and sighed, “Okay. But only five.”
Gabriela beamed at her mother, “Thank you, Mama.” She turned to Alistair and asked,
“Tell me another story, please?”
“A short one,” he said as Sophia sat on the sofa beside them and put Gabriela’s bare
feet over her lap.
Alistair smiled at Sophia, as he started the story, “Once upon a time, there was a
prince. He was very tall, handsome and rich. But he didn’t have a princess-”
“What was his name?”
“Ronnoc Riatsila,” he promptly said and winked at Sophia.
“Ugh! What an ugly name.” Gabriela puckered her turned-up nose. “Are you sure he
was a prince?”
“Aye. I’m sure,” he smiled, delighted. “So. The prince was very much alone in his big,
big castle. One day, he decided to hold a contest to find his bride. All the women in his
kingdom would have to go.”
“Only the beautiful ones,” Gabriela said. “Princes can’t marry ugly princesses.”
“Very well. Only the beautiful ones.” His grin broadened as he put an arm over
Sophia’s shoulder and pulled her closer.
She sighed happily and nestled herself on his side, listening to the story of the prince
called Ronnoc Riatsila, thinking that she wanted his princess to be called Aihpos.

“But can’t my driver just pick up the prescription?” Alistair paused as he listened to
what Doctor Lodes’s secretary told him on the phone. “Aye, of course. I’ll be there.” He
hung up and rubbed a hand on his neck. What could be this urgent? It’s just a
prescription.
As he left his office with a bad feeling in the pit of his stomach.
Lodes’s Clinic.
5.47 p.m.
“Hello, Doctor Ben. How are you?” Alistair hugged the doctor and entered his office. “How are Aunt Elizabeth and Mark?”
“Everyone’s fine, son. Everyone’s fine,” Doctor Lodes repeated as if to assure himself
that what he said was true. He motioned for Alistair to sit on the sofa at the end of his
office.
Alistair frowned at the strange behavior but complied, sitting on the comfortable gray
sofa and stretching his legs. He was tired. He had been working like a mad man lately. “I
haven’t seen Mark for a long time. He’s disappeared.”
Doctor Lodes scratched his bald head and sat next to Alistair on the sofa. “You have
been too busy to see your friends, Alistair Connor. Mark got married last week. We
missed you at the wedding.”
“What?” Alistair sat up on the sofa. Mark was one of his best friends. “I didn’t get the
invitation.”
“We sent it to your apartment. Heather rang us and talked to Beth. It seems you had
a trip planned.”
“We did travel, but I would have postponed it if I had known that Mark was getting
married. It wasn’t that important. We went to Saint Barths for the weekend to celebrate
our anniversary which was in February.”
“Well, too late now, son.” Doctor Lodes shrugged. “See that you don’t miss
Johansson’s wedding in two weeks. His father told me that Heather has declined as
well.”
What? Alistair’s mouth fell open. What’s going on?
“Did you receive the last results from Heather’s exams?” Doctor Lodes continued.
Oh, damn. I forgot Heather’s exams. I don’t even know if she did them after the
treatment. Alistair looked sheepishly at the older man and shook his head.
The doctor’s face showed no surprise. “Well then. Alistair Connor, I don’t want you to
become nervous with what I’m going to tell you.”
“Too late for that, Doctor Ben. I’ve been freaked out since our appointment in
December.” Alistair almost laughed. But his doctor and friend had such a stern
expression on his face that he knew this was no time for humor.
“My boy, I received the confirmation that the moxifloxacin was effective and that the
bacteria were eliminated. Nonetheless... It took too long to diagnose and the damage…
Treatments are evolving and maybe in the future they can reverse what’s happened-”
“You’re scaring me, Doctor Ben,” Alistair shifted on the sofa and leaned toward the
doctor to better look at his soft brown eyes.
The doctor thinned his lips and looked away for an instant.
When he looked back, his face showed a piercing sadness. “I’m so sorry to have to tell
you this, Alistair Connor. I’ve known you all your life and I love you as if you were my
own son.” He shook his bald head and a cold dreariness sifted through Alistair’s bones.
“But the test results arrived this morning. I still had hope…” He inhaled deep, rested his
hand over Alistair’s and blurted, “Son, I’m sorry, but the disease has made you infertile.”
